FIPCA 30 Years: A Conversation on the Past, Present and Future

Gerardo Herrero, born in Madrid in 1953, is a renowned Spanish film director, screenwriter, and producer. Although he earned a law degree, his true passion has always been film, a field he entered professionally alongside Javier López Blanco by founding the production company Tornasol. Today, it remains one of Spain’s leading production companies, and Herrero has produced more than 100 films through it. As a filmmaker, he has directed 15 films, the first of which was *Al acecho* (1988), starring Amparo Muñoz, Giuliano Gemma, and Icíar Bollaín. He then directed the short film *Ni contigo ni sin ti* (1992), featuring the great Paco Rabal, and the feature film *Desvío al paraíso* (1994). A year later, he directed *Malena es un nombre de tango* (1995), one of his most famous films, which adapted the novel of the same name by Almudena Grandes. With *Territorio comanche* (1996) and *Frontera sur* (1998), he continued to adapt books, the first of which was based on a story by Arturo Pérez-Reverte, who was a war correspondent at the time. As early as 2000, he directed *Las razones de mis amigos*, a drama that earned him the Special Jury Prize at SEMINCI. With *El principio de Arquímedes* (2004), he won critical acclaim, and with his next film, *Heroína* (2005), he won two awards at the Málaga Film Festival; however, he won the Best Film award at that festival for *Los aires difíciles* in 2006. His most acclaimed subsequent films have been *El corredor nocturno* (2009), *Silencio en la nieve* (2011), and *La playa de los ahogados* (2015), leading up to his most recent film: *Bajo terapia* (2023). With this latest film, he won the Special Jury Prize at the Málaga Film Festival.
